Relationship as an initiation
THE RELATIONSHIP THAT BROKE YOU OPEN
Everyone remembers their first heartbreak.
That specific, visceral devastation. The way it lives in the chest, heavy and physical, the way you couldn't eat or sleep or think about anything else. The way time moved differently, too slow and too strange, like the world had kept going without asking your permission.
Most of us survived it. Eventually dried our tears, gathered ourselves, and dared to love again.
What we didn't know then, what nobody told us, was that we were carrying it with us.
Not consciously. Not obviously. But stored, the way the body stores everything it hasn't been given the space to fully feel. Tucked into the nervous system. Written into the patterns of how we attach, how we love, how we choose, how we leave, how we stay long past the moment we should have gone.
And so the next relationship arrived. Different person. Different story. Different circumstances.
Same wound. Same pattern. Same lesson, waiting.
Modern psychology will name this for you. Attachment theory, trauma bonding, repetition compulsion, the clinical language is useful and it matters. But it only takes you so far. It can explain the pattern but it cannot always reach the place where the pattern lives.
Because the pattern doesn't live in your mind.
It lives in your body. In the held breath before a difficult conversation. In the way your stomach drops when his tone changes. In the hypervigilance you learned to call anxiety and the fawning you learned to call love. In the womb, that most sacred and intelligent part of you, that has been keeping records since long before you had words for any of this.
The mind can understand a wound.
The body has to metabolise it.
And that is a different kind of work entirely.
THE PATTERN THAT WASN'T YOURS TO BEGIN WITH
Here is what they don't tell you about the relationships that break us.
The wound they find was rarely created by them.
He didn't build it. He just found it. Recognised it, the way certain people unconsciously recognise certain openings, and stayed there.
The wound was older. Quieter. Built in a room long before him, in the years when you were learning what love looked like, what safety felt like, what you had to be in order to be chosen.
Perhaps you learned that love was conditional. That it came when you performed well, when you were agreeable, when you made yourself easier to hold. Perhaps you learned that your needs were too much, that your feelings were inconvenient, that shrinking was safer than being seen.
Perhaps nobody taught you this explicitly.
Perhaps it was just the water you swam in. The atmosphere of your earliest attachments. The invisible curriculum running beneath everything, shaping the woman you would become, the love you would seek, the treatment you would accept because it felt, on some cellular level, like home.
This is not your fault.
It is also not your destiny.
Because here is what the initiation is actually for.
Not to punish you. Not to prove something about your worth or your judgement or your intelligence. But to surface what was hidden. To bring into the light what has been running in the dark. To create enough of a rupture in the familiar story that you finally, finally have to stop and ask a different question.
Not what is wrong with me.
But what is this here to show me.
WHEN THE BREAKDOWN IS ACTUALLY THE BREAKTHROUGH
There is a woman I want to speak to directly.
The one who is sitting in the wreckage of something she didn't see coming. Or perhaps she did see it coming and stayed anyway, which carries its own particular shame, the shame of knowing and continuing, of loving someone past the point where love was safe.
She is not weak. She is not foolish. She is not behind.
She is standing at the threshold of her own initiation.
And the threshold is the hardest place to stand because it is neither here nor there. The old life no longer fits and the new one hasn't taken shape yet. She is between versions of herself, in the liminal space where transformation actually happens, even though it feels like nothing is happening except pain.
In the ancient traditions, this was the space the elders held. The in-between. The dark night. The dissolution before the reformation.
They knew that what looks like falling apart is often the soul insisting on something truer.
They knew that the cracking open is not the end of the story.
It is the beginning of the real one.
The crack is where the light gets in.
That line has been attributed to many, lived by more. Because anyone who has been truly broken open knows it not as a comfort but as a truth. The parts of you that cracked, the places where you were finally too tired to keep the armour up, those became the places where something real could finally breathe.
Your sensitivity. Your depth. Your capacity for genuine intimacy. Your ability to sit with another woman in her pain without flinching, because you have sat in your own.
These are not casualties of what happened to you.
They are the gifts of your initiation.
THE ALCHEMY
So what do we do with this.
Not the passive version of surrender, the waiting and hoping and trusting that time will heal it. Time alone doesn't heal. Time plus consciousness, time plus the willingness to turn toward what hurts rather than away from it, that is what creates the alchemy.
To use a hardship consciously means to ask it what it came to show you. To sit in the fire of your own transformation rather than running from the heat. To meet yourself in all of it, the grief, the rage, the shame, the tenderness, without collapsing into any of it or performing strength you don't currently feel.
It means coming home to the body. To the breath. To the womb, where the deepest records are stored and where the deepest healing is possible.
It means letting this be the initiation it was always meant to be.
One where you emerge not as a harder version of yourself, defended and resolved never to be hurt again, but as a softer one. More open. More rooted. More herself than she has ever been.
Because that is what the sacred fires were always for.
Not to destroy.
To refine.
To burn away everything that was never truly you, so what remains is undeniable.
A CLOSING WORD
My own hardships opened me.
Not gently. Not in the way I would have chosen. But completely.
They made me more sensitive to life, not less. More able to feel, not more defended against feeling. More connected to the sacred in the ordinary, the way I was as a child lying in the grass watching light move through leaves, before the world taught me that wonder was not productive.
I came back to myself through the fire. Through the body. Through the womb work that met me where nothing else could reach.
And I built House of Her for the woman standing where I once stood.
At the threshold. Between who she was and who she is becoming. Not yet sure if she is breaking down or breaking through.
My love, it is both.
And you are not alone in it.
If this landed somewhere in your body, if something in you recognised itself in these words, I created something for you.
